185th Annual Royal Hibernian Academy Exhibition

May 25th - August 8th 2015

Inspired by the exuberant floral arrangements of 17th Century Dutch still life paintings, 'Memento Mori - Flora' is a complex floral porcelain arrangement, displayed under a glass bell jar, similar to those popular in Victorian times. As well as protecting the delicate porcelain from damage and dust, the glass dome creates an other worldly, ethereal quality to the piece. Memento Mori were originally intended to remind viewers of the fleeting nature of life, thus supposedly encouraging a life lived in a morally upright manner. I intend no such moralising, aiming to celebrate the cycles of life within nature and therefore life in general.
